The Illusion of Strong Emergence: How Do We Explain Consciousness?
In a recent poll of nearly 2,000 people, 75% agreed that consciousness is an emergent property of material brain processes. As neuroscientist Vladimir Alipov notes in a recent post, this idea reflects the prevailing consensus in modern neuroscience.
The argument seems intuitive: atoms and single neurons aren't conscious, but when enough of them assemble into complex networks, entirely new properties arise. By this logic, consciousness is absent in bacteria, present in animals with complex nervous systems, and presumably bound to emerge in advanced AI.
However, relying on "emergence" to explain consciousness presents serious theoretical flaws.
Weak vs. Strong Emergence
To understand why, we must separate two distinct concepts:
Weak Emergence: Macro-level properties are fully predictable from micro-level interactions.
Examples: Water molecules forming a wave, ants building a colony, or simple cellular rules driving embryonic development. No new causal laws are created.
Strong Emergence: A system acquires non-reducible properties that exist only at the macro level. The whole becomes fundamentally greater than the sum of its parts—a view held by theorists like Giulio Tononi. Here, biological laws govern individual neurons, but distinct psychological laws govern the whole system.
Counterarguments to Strong Emergence Vladimir highlights four major problems with using strong emergence to address the "hard problem" of consciousness:
No Precedent: There isn't a single verified example of strong emergence anywhere else in physics or biology.
An Unprecedented Leap: It posits a property—subjective, first-person experience (qualia)—that bears zero resemblance to any other physical phenomenon.
Violation of Causal Closure: If muscle contraction is fully explained by physical pathways (pyramidal neuron → motoneuron → muscle), then consciousness is just a passive epiphenomenon.
If consciousness actively influences movement without a physical neural trace, it creates an impossible "causal gap" where action potentials fire without physical causes.
Explanatory Deficit: Calling consciousness "emergent" doesn't explain how many neurons are needed, how they must be wired, or when it evolved.
Ultimately, invoking strong emergence simply swaps the word "mystery" for "emergence" without explaining the mechanism.
