"What Is the Basis of Your Confidence?"
"Then the Rabshakeh said to them, 'Say now to Hezekiah, "Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria: 'What confidence is this in which you trust?'"'" (Isaiah 36:4, NKJV)
This is far more than a political question. It is a spiritual one. Behind the voice of the Rabshakeh, we can recognize one of the enemy's oldest strategies: to challenge the very foundation of our faith.
"What is the basis of your confidence?"
This is the same question the devil still asks believers today. When you face sickness, financial hardship, family struggles, or spiritual warfare, he whispers, "Why do you still believe? Where is your God? What is your confidence built upon?"
The Hebrew idea behind "trust" conveys the meaning of leaning completely upon someone, relying on them for security and safety. It is not mere optimism; it is the very foundation on which your entire life rests.
The Rabshakeh wanted to destroy Hezekiah's faith before he ever destroyed Jerusalem's walls. Satan knows that a believer who loses confidence in God has already been defeated inwardly, even if they still appear strong outwardly. That is why his first attack is always against faith.
Yet this question can also become a holy examination from the Holy Spirit.
What is your confidence built upon?
Is it built on money? On your health? On people? On your own abilities? Or is it built upon the Lord?
Pentecostal faith is never built on circumstances but on the living presence of God. We trust in the God who still baptizes with the Holy Spirit, still heals the sick, still delivers the oppressed, still speaks to His people, and still fulfills every promise He has spoken.
Hezekiah did not answer with pride or human reasoning. He entered the presence of God. He spread the enemy's threats before the Lord. That remains the greatest response any believer can give to the accusations of the enemy: not to argue with him, but to pray.
Whenever the devil asks you, "What is the basis of your confidence?", you can boldly answer:
My confidence is founded upon the blood of Jesus Christ. It is founded upon the unchanging Word of God. It is founded upon the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within me. It is founded upon the promises of Almighty God, who has never lost a battle.
The Rabshakeh spoke as though Assyria's victory was certain. But he made one fatal mistake—he left God out of his calculations. And whenever God steps into the battle, every human prediction is overturned.
Perhaps today you hear that same question echoing in your heart: "What is the basis of your confidence?"
Do not let fear answer. Do not let doubt answer. Let your faith answer.
For the one whose confidence is built upon the Lord may be shaken, but will never be destroyed; may be surrounded, but will never be conquered; may be tested, but will never be abandoned.
When your confidence rests in God, you are not merely waiting for circumstances to change—you are waiting for the God of the impossible to reveal His glory.
