Scientists were discovering that compounds derived from coal tar, a petroleum byproduct, could be used as synthetic drugs.
Aspirin, derived from coal tar, had been launched by Bayer in 1899.
The petroleum waste that Rockefeller had previously had to dispose of could now be resold to the public as medicine, with a markup of about 10,000%.
He had another problem. American medicine in 1900 was a competitive ecosystem made up of homeopaths, herbalists, naturopaths, osteopaths, midwives, and traditional doctors who used diet, plants, water, and lifestyle as their primary healing tools.
About half of American medical schools taught some form of natural or alternative medicine.
Rockefeller invested in the German pharmaceutical industry, eventually taking a major stake in IG Farben, the conglomerate that included BASF, Hoechst, and Bayer.
He then commissioned a report.
This report was written by Abraham Flexner, an educator with no medical training, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Carnegie Foundation, and published in 1910.
It declared that natural and alternative medical schools were pseudoscience.
It recommended closing more than half of American medical schools and standardizing the rest around a medicine based on patented synthetic drugs.
Congress acted.
Half of American medical schools closed in a decade.
The others accepted funding from Rockefeller and Carnegie on the condition of reorganizing their programs around pharmaceutical treatment.
Nutrition was eliminated.
Herbal medicine was eliminated.
Lifestyle interventions were eliminated.
The role of the doctor was redefined:
diagnose the symptom, prescribe the drug.
The drugs were derived from petroleum.
The petroleum came from refineries controlled by Rockefeller.
The medical schools were funded by Rockefeller.
The journals were funded by Rockefeller. The American Medical Association was supported by Rockefeller.
The hospitals were funded by Rockefeller.
By 1925, the American medical system had become a vertically integrated extension of the oil industry, operating under the marketing slogan that it was scientific.
This is the system that exists today.
The pharmaceutical industry generates about $1.5 trillion in annual revenue.
The American population, 4% of the world total, consumes about 50% of all drugs produced.
The system was not designed to make people healthy.
It was designed to manage symptoms in a way that creates lifelong customers.
A healthy patient is a former customer.
A "managed" patient, who takes a drug every day for the rest of their life, is a annuity.
