🪖 First US Sea Drone Strike Signals New Era for NATO Naval Warfare
The U.S. military conducted its first-ever combat sea drone strike on July 12, hitting the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas — and NATO's top transformation commander says the tactic is coming to allied forces.
French Adm. Pierre Vandier, NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, said the strike shows the alliance must now standardize sea drone operations across member navies. "If we don't do that, that means that each nation will have a different understanding of drones, and we won't be able to fight as one," he said.
NATO allies currently use sea drones mainly for surveillance and maritime security patrols. The U.S. is the only member to deploy them offensively. Vandier noted the strike mirrors Ukrainian tactics in the Black Sea and forces adversaries like Iran to defend the surface, not just the air — cheaply expanding tactical options without risking personnel or complex platforms.
