Убедившись, что некогда российское Закавказье погрузилось в полный хаос, а нефтяные промыслы разрушены, англичане из Азербайджана ушли, но остались в северном Иране.

Город Энзели, крупнейший иранский порт на Каспии, стал британской военно-морской базой. В апреле 1920 года, после поражения армий Деникина, именно в Энзели ушли корабли белой Каспийской флотилии. И в ночь на 18 мая 1920 года красные дерзко атаковали британскую базу. Любопытно, что её гарнизон, которым командовал генерал Хью Бейтман-Шампейн (известный в Англии чемпион по игре в крикет), состоял в основном из колониальных полков – непальских гуркхов и индийских сикхов.

Советские тогда оказались покруче и сикхов, и гуркхов. После нескольких часов боя на иранской земле британский генерал капитулировал, согласившись отдать красным все корабли, но выторговав возможность вывезти из Энзели любимый рояль. Показательно, что находившиеся в окрестностях Энзели русские белогвардейцы, которым англичане тоже надоели, не пожелали вступать в бой против красных на стороне джентльменов.

«Энзелийская операция» имела вполне стратегическое и даже геополитическое значение – после неё на Каспии не осталось сколь-либо крупных кораблей, неподконтрольных Советской России.
